In 1949, Kihachiro Onitsuka founded an athletic equipment company in his hometown of Kobe, Japan, under the name Onitsuka Tiger, which specialized in the manufacturing of basketball shoes. Nearly 30 years later, Onitsuka merged with GTO and JELENK forming ASICS in 1977, which also marked the introduction of his patented Gel sole technology to American markets. ASICS, which is an acronym for the latin phrase “anima sana in corpore sang”, translates to “healthy soul in a healthy body”. Today, the brand has taken this philosophy and expanded past the production of basketball sneakers, now creating footwear and equipment for a variety of sports and lifestyles, cementing themselves as a top contender in the world of footwear and innovation.
