In September 1985, Nike and MJ launched the Air Jordan 1. A month later, they were "banned" by the league for violating the uniform code. Although the AJ1 is now a sports and streetwear icon, back when the sneakers debuted, they were highly disruptive and instantly revolutionary. While the league may have tried to stop MJ from lacing up in the original AJ1, they couldn't do anything to temper the fans, so "They Can't Stop You From Wearing Them" became a defiant rallying cry.
The spirit of this iconic silhouette is brought to life through Jordan Brand’s latest drop, wrapping up the month of March with the release of the Air Jordan 1 Retro High OG “Rebellionaire”. This release takes the AJ1, which comes dressed in the familiar “OG Shadow” colourway, and applies an all-over tonal print to the upper with graffiti-esque text that reads “They Can’t Stop You From Wearing Them”. X’s in ‘rustic orange’ are then found printed at the heel, helping to further call back to the “Banned” motif. The silhouette meets the hardwood with the “OG Shadow’s” iconic white and ‘particle grey’ midsole & outsole pairing, while two sets of flat laces in black and grey help tie off the release.
