As we come into 2020, we are excited to announce our first in-house release of the year, a pair of t-shirts celebrating Edmonton’s early Dance Music scene, a subculture that became instrumental to both modern music and the clubbing experience. This same subculture helped pave a way for shops like Foosh, which began as a home for record and t-shirt collectors alike, while the decades-long connection that has existed between streetwear and dance music provided the inspirations for this collection.
The white tee, titled “The Rise”, celebrates one of our owners, Rob Clarke (then known as DJ Tryptomene, seen below) and his participation in Edmonton’s early dance music scene as a DJ. Directly referencing just a few of the party’s and promoter’s that helped manifest his early career, the tee features the names of some of Edmonton’s early rave promotion companies, Nexus and Universal Dance Productions (which later became Universal Underground), as well as the parties that allowed Rob, among many others, to develop themselves as disc jockeys.
The black tee, titled “The Origin” and worn by local techno legend Dragan Jargic (DJ Dragon) below, references one of the most important clubs to Edmonton’s early club scene — The Bronx. Once the Salvation Army Citadel, and known today as The Starlight Room, The Bronx started as a private club home to underground music of the early-90s, and it provided a rare space for all who wanted to dance. The front graphic signifies the inclusiveness that both dance music and The Bronx brought to Edmonton, while the back features a direct representation of party flyer from 1992, titled “Brilliant”.
